Meher Baba’s principal book is God Speaks. In it Baba describes what he calls ‘the theme of Creation.’ This theme is one where God, who was originally in a state of deep sleep, woke and by way of a lengthy dream that encompassed evolution, millions of lives in reincarnation, and a lengthy realization process realized he was God who had created all these imagined things.
The book is cryptically dedicated, To the Universe, the Illusion that Sustains Reality. Some people have wondered what Baba might have meant by this cryptic dedication, which he did not directly explain.
I think its meaning is quite obvious. And I thought I’d take a moment to clarify it.
Baba uses the words Creation and Universe interchangeably. The Universe is God’s Creation. The Universe is never really created, because it is only a dream God has. But it is a significant dream with a profound purpose.
Remember, this is all a dream, but a significant dream. Its purpose is to make you aware of the nothingness of the dream itself. – Meher Baba
It is by way of this dream that God gains consciousness. Consciousness is in turn a precondition for realization. So it is by way of this dream that God realizes himself.
In the beginning, before God awoke, before evolution, God existed. But He was only a latency. God, along with his infinite nature, was there but had not manifested yet. It was only by way of passing through this long and difficult dream that God was fully reified. And that is the meaning of Baba saying that the illusion sustains Reality.
In the beginning God was asleep. Today God is fully awake and works continually through the five embodied Perfect Masters.
If all this illusion were to suddenly disappear, God would still exist, but would temporarily return to his latent State. See The Ten States of God.
